Hello and welcome to April’s challenge.

Each month I will be sharing a new post with a different theme and a challenge for you to go out and complete, should you wish to do so. The idea is to share some of your favourite images from the challenge on the chat page of my substack. Please feel free to post your images and comment on others so that we can build a supportive community around our shared love of photography.

This month the theme is photographing water.

When I think about photographing water I usually think about the sea. I am lucky enough to live on the coast so seascapes have become a big part of my photography. However if you don’t live within easy access of the coast there are all sorts of other ways you can photograph water including; rivers and lakes, rain and puddles or you could even set up an indoor studio and photograph water droplets. Water is everywhere if we choose to look for it and it can provide us with many different opportunities. We can experiment with shutter speed, play with reflections, or work with bokeh using the out of focus highlights that reflect off the surface of water. We can photograph landscapes through rain splattered windows or reflections in puddles. In all these aspects our images can be as representative or as abstract as we wish.

For some inspiration I thought I would share a few of my images and delve into the thought process behind them. I have tried to be as creative as possible and I hope this will inspire your own foray into photographing water.
