Hello and welcome to August’s challenge.

Each month I will be sharing a new post with a different theme and a challenge for you to go out and complete, should you wish to do so. The idea is to share some of your favourite images from the challenge on the chat page of my substack. Please feel free to post your images and comment on others so that we can build a supportive community around our shared love of photography.

This month, the theme is landscapes with a shallow depth of field.

With all the blue sky days we have been having this summer I have been trying to mix up my image making by working with wide apertures and shallow depth of field. Often in landscape photography we are striving to make sharp images where all details from front to back are well defined. However I have come to the conclusion that whilst this is what we usually all do, it is not something that I want to do all the time.

I love landscape images where only part of the scene is sharp. For me they add depth and emotion and I also think they are more fun to make from a creative point of view.
