Hello and welcome to Inspired, a weekly email for my paid subscribers. In this series I want to explore topics which I hope might spark some inspiration for your own photography. I will talk about my thought process for creating images, both in the field and in post processing. The posts will be linked in some way to the monthly challenges, hopefully giving you all lots of food for thought.

This week I wanted to talk about ways of incorporating water into our image making without visiting the coast, a river or lake. I wanted to see if I could use water in the garden to create a panel of abstract images using reflections and the few flowers that were blooming in March.

For my experiment I used a black plastic tray and filled it with water. I put my 105mm macro lens on my camera and took a torch out with me to light the flowers from underneath. I felt I needed to do this because it was a bright sunny day and the shadow around the underside of the flowers was quite strong. I was looking to create some abstract images so I decided to make the water in the tray move while I was taking my shot.

In my mind this was all fairly straight forward but in practice it was little more challenging.
