Hello and welcome to Inspired, a weekly email for my paid subscribers. In this series I want to explore topics which I hope might spark some inspiration for your own photography. I will talk about my thought process for creating images, both in the field and in post processing. The posts will be linked in some way to the monthly challenges, hopefully giving you all lots of food for thought.

I have been away in Scotland for the last three weeks working on a new project and doing some research for some new workshops north of the border. During my time away I spent many hours photographing water and I thought I would pass on my thought process in this week’s Inspired post.

Water is one of my favourite subjects to photograph, simply because there are so many different ways you can approach it. It is possible to change its appearance dramatically by our choice of shutter speed and as a result the mood and emotion of the image will also change. Water can be photographed as part of the landscape or it can become the main subject. It can be used to create minimalistic ‘fine art’ work or dramatic, energetic images. Sometimes the possibilities and choices can seem daunting so I thought I would discuss my thought process for capturing and processing watery images using some of the photos I made in Scotland. I will talk about the reasons I made the choices I did and what I was hoping to achieve with each image.
