Hello and welcome to Inspired, a weekly email for my paid subscribers. In this series I want to explore topics which I hope might spark some inspiration for your own photography. I will talk about my thought process for creating images, both in the field and in post processing. The posts will be linked in some way to the monthly challenges, hopefully giving you all lots of food for thought.

30 second exposure at F16, 43mm focal length. Low viewpoint, 0.5m above the ground

This week I thought I would talk through a series of photographs that I made on the coast on Sunday morning. The aim of the post is to show how it is possible to ‘work a scene’ and change a composition completely by changing a few variables - notably focal length, viewpoint and camera height.

When I go out to make images I rarely stick with one composition. I will ‘work a scene’ by changing my viewpoint, the height at which I am shooting and my focal length. These three variables have a huge impact on how the elements within the scene relate to each other and I thought it would be interesting to discuss my approach to all three.
