Hello and welcome to July’s challenge.

Each month I will be sharing a new post with a different theme and a challenge for you to go out and complete, should you wish to do so. The idea is to share some of your favourite images from the challenge on the chat page of my substack. Please feel free to post your images and comment on others so that we can build a supportive community around our shared love of photography.

This month, the theme is emotional landscapes.

When we talk about the process of landscape photography we regularly discuss the technical aspects of aperture, shutter speed and focus. We debate the nuances of composition but we focus much less on the mood of an image and I think this is a mistake. The emotion that a photographer conveys within an image is really important. It helps tell a story and it is generally what we connect with as a viewer. An image without emotion is a photograph without soul. It won’t move us or make us feel anything.

In July’s challenge I want to talk about summer photography, but more specifically I want to discuss emotion and how we can create meaning in our images.
