This is another very interesting and thought-provoking piece Gill, thank you. Thanks too for the Alistair Humphreys Local book recommendation. I bought it after reading your piece last week and have hardly put it down! I will be very interested to see how your work at Shingle Street develops. I love the place too but find myself too often taking the predictable images.

Thank you very much Steve, I am really glad you enjoyed the blog and the book recommendation!

I am really enjoying the freedom that a new project brings and the opportunities it provides to experiment without feeling the pressure to come home with portfolio images. I hope you will enjoy following my journey. 🙂

A very interesting post Gill and another fine set of images, I am particularly drawn to the first one, it’s very painterly. Your project sounds just perfect, you’re very lucky to have such a beautiful stretch of coastline so local to you. Your article has given me that motivational kick to get on with my own local project, tentatively started last year, but left to simmer over the past couple of months. You give wise advice about doing background research on place, it’s so important and certainly gave me ideas on various approaches I can take at the time…I also found that learning about the history of the site inspires ideas as well as being fascinating. Good luck with your project, I’ll look forward to seeing how it progresses and changes over the coming months.

Thank you very much Lin for your kind comments. I am glad you enjoyed the post and found something in it that inspired you.

I have found that reading and researching my locations and subjects always throws up something interesting that I hadn't previously considered and I agree that it often inspires creative ideas too.

Good luck with your own project 🙂

Good luck with your project. Love your photos and enjoyed this post. The first of this set is brilliant, great colours and I can almost hear the waves breaking on the shingle in front of me and then pulling back to repeat time and time again 👍

Thank Gill, I really look forward to seeing how you discover the story you want to tell. I have a question - do you have an intended audience or use for the output of this process? The reason I ask is that I have a place that I have taken a lot of photos of, it’s a beautiful place and sometimes my photos reflect this. But I have only just realised a theme to bring a series of photos together when I was thinking about building a project for a photography competition. Suddenly I feel quite driven to pull together the images I can envision.

Thanks for your comments James. I do have a goal in mind for the project. I have hired a gallery for a week in December and plan to bring my story to life as a body of work for the gallery. I would also like to turn it into a book once it is finished. I think if you have a goal it helps provide motivation which is a good driver to get out and take images.

I wish you luck with your project and the competition.

Good luck with your project. The initial images look great. I think you've certainly taken on a challenge to show the spirit and soul of the location, and to convey that to the viewer. I'm certain you will succeed. Do you think there may be a book in the offing ?

I've got some German Army Surplus mittens for cold conditions.....and they've got elastic wrist loops !

Thank you very much Andrew for your comments and offer of gloves! I forgot mine again today so clearly I need some sewn into my coat!

I am hoping that the project will result in a book - that is my intention anyway. 🙂

Absolutely fabulous images Gill and your project sounds delightful.

Thank you for the guided steps, it's always helpful starting a photographic journey with a start and finish mapped out.

Good luck, stay warm and put those gloves on elastic though the arms!

Read your piece after listing the things that I need/want/hope to do/accomplish in my own photographic journey, including a project that I have thought about and started to plan. I guess you will be visiting Shinglestreet often, and I look forward to seeing your images and reading your narrative as the months and seasons progress! Hopefully some of your enthusiasm and commitment will rub off!🤔

A lovely piece, Gill - I'll be interested to follow your progress throughout the year. A timely prod, too, for me to get out and start photographing something close to home over an extended period.

Ruth Brownlee's work is gorgeous. I also like the work of Ellis O'Connor - it's more colourful than Ruth's but very elemental. Have you come across Samantha Clark here on Substack? She's an artist on Orkney focusing on water https://lifeboat.substack.com/

Thank you very much Lynn for your kind comments and for the recommendations. I do follow Samantha Clark on Substack - her work is beautiful, but I don't know Ellis O'Connor so will check it out - thank you 🙂
