Thank you very much for your comments and the wonderful people you have mentioned. Substack is full of really diverse writers and artists and has been a constant source of inspiration to me.
I also love photobooks - they are a constant source of inspiration. Thank you for the links - a lot of inspiration just flicking through websites (I am very tempted by the Matt Oliver book, but P&H doubles the cost!)
Thank you for your comment James and I agree, I have a bit of an addiction for photo books. It's a pity about the cost as I think the Matt Oliver book would be really inspiring.
Wonderful! And I can see how you find inspiration in them. Photobooks are my go-to source if I need inspiration, want to learn something or if I just want to have a good time.
Thank you very much for your comments Susanne and I am glad you enjoyed the post. Photobooks are always my go to source for inspiration, the only trouble is I am running out of room to put them all. 🙂
I'll have to check these out, particularly "Mystical" as a reminder of an afternoon spent there with my son and grandchildren back in 2021. It is indeed a mystical place, strange and wonderful, and seemingly out of place in the surrounding landscape.
Wistmans wood is definitely a mystical place. I went there a few years ago, inspired by the book and found it really magical. The book is worth looking at - I think it is on edition 2 now.
Gosh - totally inspiring - just looking the photos here. I think I remember when that amazing book on Harris came out - (about maybe 10 years ago?) I didn't think it was so expensive then (maybe £55?)or maybe I'm thinking of another one? I'm glad we all get to read your blogs to inspire us!!
Thank you so much Sue, I am glad you enjoyed the post.
I got my Harris photobook about 17 years ago and it may well have been that price, but I can't remember. It is a huge book and very beautiful and is one of my treasured possessions. It has also inspired me hugely so was worth the outlay, and is nice to know that writing about it has inspired others.
Unfortunately photo book purchasing has had to be put on hold, they are simply too pricey. I must admit the Scottish books look wonderful and I do have Neil’s book which is excellent.
Thanks for your comments Jon. I also have Neil's Scottish book which I agree is excellent. I love books because they provide me with so much inspiration but I also agree that they come at a cost. I guess it doesn't matter where we find our inspiration just that we spend time looking. 🙂
Hi Gill. I only have a few photo books, 3 of which just cover East Anglia. These include your book Grounded, which apart from relating to life during the pandemic, also shows the versatility of black and white images and the rewards of what can be found locally. I’ve also enjoyed From The Edge Of Permanence, where your mix of landscape and detailed shots is very inspiring and it’s interesting how Linda’s book influenced you to produce this. I should probably buy some more when budget allows and appreciate your recommendations.
Thank you very much for your comments David and I am really glad to hear that you have enjoyed my books. I think books are a great way to appreciate the work of others but I guess as Ian commented they can be expensive. It is always good to keep following the people who inspire you as looking at the work of others can often kick start your own creative process.
Wonderful, inspirational books that show places I'd love to visit myself and I'd also like to own but the cost of many is out of my affordability range.
Books can be a bit pricy but I guess that reflects the time and effort and material costs that go into producing them. Unfortunately many of them aren't available in libraries either so it makes accessing them difficult. However I think browsing galleries online or visiting exhibitions in person which are often free can be a good substitute and just as inspiring. 🙂
An interesting article Gill. Photobook inspirations for me depend on what I am working on but one that stays with me throughout is Fay Godwins 'Land'. Her moody black and white landscapes inspired me when I was first using a film camera and has stayed with me ever since!
what inspires me? let's keep it substack and with no offence to the rest (you are all an inspiration) mention my muses:
- the simplicity of Susanne Helmert
- the very personal approach of Manuela Thames
- the raw of Nat
- the complexity of Juliette
Thank you very much for your comments and the wonderful people you have mentioned. Substack is full of really diverse writers and artists and has been a constant source of inspiration to me.
Oh, wow! I didn‘t expect to find my name in a comment like this here. I am moved! Thank you! ♥️
Your work is really inspiring Susanne and your photobook - A humble life - is beautiful.

Such a beautiful selection of books, and your own work shared here as well.
Thank you very much, I am glad you enjoyed it.

A fascinating and engaging read, Gill. Thanks for sharing. I found both your narrative and the photobooks you referenced quite inspiring!
Thank you so much Glen, I am really glad you enjoyed the post.
