Some lovely images of the more intimate landscape, which are complimented by your writing to give a sense of place.

Good luck with the printing. I really enjoy watching the image grow from the printer and I believe holding a physical version adds to the satisfaction of photography rather than viewing on screen. Perhaps it's creating something tangible that does this....or my age !

If you haven't already come across him I recommend Keith Cooper at Northlight https://youtube.com/@KeithCooper?si=tNXX5J4YpLSsAYNE

Keith has years of printing experience and I've found him very generous with his time in answering questions

I don't think we can ever truly say we have mastered photography as there's always something to learn. Without striving for improvement or new ways of doing things, boredom would soon set in. Perhaps a better title might be become a competent photographer...but that's not an attention grabbing strap line !

Thank you very much Andrew for your comments and for the link which I will enjoy looking at. I am really enjoying printing at the moment and agree with you about the satisfaction of holding something tangible - I think we should all print our work at least once as it seems to complete the whole photographic process.

Beautiful images Gill. I have to agree photography is a journey to which there is no destination - there's always more to learn. Fay Godwin springs to mind with her amazing black and white work and then later in life switching to beautiful, abstract colour images in Glassworks and Secret Lives, I understand sometimes using a Diana plastic camera for the soft effects it produced.

Some beautiful images Gill. I did a two day fine art printing workshop last weekend - still processing all that information. Printing really exposes any weaknesses in an image!

Thank you very much James for your kind comments.

I imagine the printing course was really interesting. I am really enjoying the whole process at the moment, it definitely completes my photography. I love seeing an image come to life through capture, processing and print.

Great images. Nice to see both the dark and light methods. I do agree with you, the light one seems more spring like, the dark one is dramatic really showing just the flower. Indeed photography is a journey. I would bet Ansel Adams was learning new things up to the last photo he took. That is the wonder of life, the journey never ends as long as we are alive. Thanks for the post, Enjoy

This is a beautiful collection of images. I too prefer the brighter edits, they have such a delicate, hopeful feeling to them. Good luck with printing!

A lovely read and the printing side sounds very exciting! I do love the snowdrop images and of course you know my favourites but do admire your personal style.

Thank you for your tutorial and recommendations, as suggested, camera at the ready!

Thank you very much Ian, I really appreciate your comments.

I know dark and moody is much more your style and I am sure you would make a really good job of black and white snowdrop images. 🙂

Lovely Gill. Finally caught up with one!! Gorgeous ethereal images and love the very shallow dof. A very good point that you mention is the importance of the background so it doesn’t compete or distract. 😀

Another, if slightly different, great read, your images certainly compere to those other photographers you linked to, and dare I say surpass many! I have followed Erik for a while. Looking forward to next week already!😀

These are lovely photos and I think you nailed your goal of achieving a light and springlike mood in each of them! I hope you will keep us updated on how the printing process goes. I have only made a limited number of prints of my pictures and this was by having a lab fulfill the order. Its expensive and feels like a roll of the dice each time, but so far has turned out ok. Printing my own work seems out of reach for me, but I'm very interested to hear your experience!

Thank you very much for your comments Erik. I too put off printing my own work for years, electing to use local labs instead. However I have finally taken the plunge to get a printer and so far it is proving a lot of fun. The initial process of getting everything set up was difficult but getting the right printer profiles for my printer was crucial. I am enjoying choosing paper to compliment my images and I definitely think that printing has added a new level of creativity to my work. I can now control the final outcome much better.

I would definitely recommend it, but like everything else it is a big learning curve.

It seems like a good option, after the initial hurdles. Do you see this being cost effective over lab printing in the long run?

In the long run definitely. The initial costs are quite high but over time the cost per image will be cheaper than lab prints. They will also be exactly how I want them to be which is key for me.

I also have plans to use the printer for my workshops so that I can take clients through the whole photographic process from camera skills, to processing and printing. It has definitely opened some more doors for me 🙂
