An excellent blog. Being out in nature and taking note of what is happening is good for the soul, especially if it results in finding out more about our world e.g. what was that bird or why was it doing that ?

Sometimes I think we need to ensure as photographers we don't become overly concentrated on the little rectangle of the viewfinder and ignore the greater scene around us at the time

Thank you for your kind comments Andrew. I am glad you enjoyed the blog.

I agree, that it is easy to get fixated on getting a good image, focusing only on what is in our viewfinders. Sometimes its good to put the camera down for a while and really connect with the wider landscape 🙂

I love this! One of the things I love best about photography is how much more observant and mindful about nature it makes me!

Thank you very much Erik. I couldn't agree more. Photography has really helped my connection with nature, it makes me much more observant and I discover things that I just wouldn't have come across otherwise.

Lovely words and images, Gill. I’ve always loved being around trees, even more so since reading “Finding the mother tree” by Canadian scientist Suzanne Simard whose research led to our current understanding of their connectedness. Nature is magical and resilient, for sure, but more needs to be done by us all to protect and preserve it. I’ve yet find my lone tree but will enjoy being in nature while I look for it.

Thank you very much Julia.

I have that book on my bookshelf and need to make time to read it. I think nature needs us all to connect with it more deeply so that we are driven to protect what we have left. Enjoy your search for your lone tree 🙂

I also love photographing these isolated trees, although they are often called 'paddock trees' in Australia. Not quite so romantic, and I also feel a bit sad, isolated as they are through agriculture or fire regimes to create grasslands before colonisation. My pleasure is in being surrounded by trees as far as the eye can see!

Thank you very much James for your comments, it is good to hear from someone so far away! I agree, woodlands are wonderful but I do find the lone trees intriguing. I will check out your Substack 🙂
